Marketing, Motherhood, and Mayhem

Not a Yankee Fan

July 28th, 2010 by Deb McLean

I’m not a Yankee Fan, but I am a fan of Derek Jeter.  It’s hard not to be.  I can root for my Rays or my husband’s Red Sox, but I can’t root against Derek Jeter.  A few years back, Jeter was in a wicked slump.  I don’t recall the stats, but he hadn’t gotten a hit in FOREVER.  Many teams and fans would have given up on a lesser player and he would have gotten a lot of heat.  I was at Yankee Stadium for a game during that slump and every time that guy got up to bat, you would have thought he was the MLB Home Run leader.  Yankees fans stood up and cheered in support of this great player and more importantly this great guy.  I’m not surprised recently that Sports Business Daily determined via survey that Derek Jeter is baseball’s most marketable player (Evan Longoria is #6). Jeter secured nearly 80 percent of first-place votes from corporate brand managers and marketing executives, possibly because he’s the only player on the ballot whom casual baseball fans would know.  Granted, he’s dated a number of actresses, supermodels and Mariah Carey.   Yes, he is good-looking.  But he is also charming and charismatic, probably why he was selected to speak at George Steinbrenner’s tribute.  It’s nice to see a professional athlete that is not tied to some crazy sex scandal, drugs or supporting dog fighting.  He’ll actually wave back to fans or flash a smile.   It’s no wonder his brand association moves a lot of products like Nike, VISA and Skippy Peanut Butter just to name a few.

  • Derek Jeter rocks! He seems like such a great guy and as you said, hasnt had a scandal to his name. He plays hard and the fact that he is good looking is an added bonus (I had a poster of him in my college dorm room!). Good post Deb, you hit it right on the money! :)
