Simple tips for using the internet to market your business

October 18th, 2010 by Deb McLean

So, you’ve heard about Facebook, you even have an account to stay in touch with your kids and your high school buddies.  Not so sure if your should “Tweet” or use banner ads or pre-rolls?  It just gets so confusing!   But, since there’s such a buzz about it, how do you successfully use the internet as a marketing tool?

You know what you know

If you don’t know how to use Facebook or Twitter, either hire somebody to help you or use a more traditional marketing outlet.  You don’t want to spend all of your time away from other pressing matters to learn about Twitter or how to use Facebook for marketing. Just because these are buzzwords doesn’t mean you have to use them.

Test and Retest

Of course you want your product to be successful online, but you’re going to have to accept that your advertising money is sometimes going to be wasted. Every successful online advertiser probably didn’t get there the first time.  They committed to spend a portion of their budget trying new ad copy to see what makes the cash register ring and what doesn’t. For every one that does well, many will fail but the ones that work will easily pay for those that don’t. Don’t give up. Keep trying.

Speed wins!

The internet moves fast. Advertising campaigns should be just a few very targeted, to-the-point words to get a reader’s attention. Long-winded ad copy doesn’t work online. If you can’t hook them in 5 seconds, you’re probably not going to gain a customer that way.

FREE will ultimately pay for itself

The internet was created as a free source of information and largely remains that way. Every day people use Facebook for free, watch movies and listen to music for free, read the news for free, and sign up for free products and offers. If you want to catch somebody’s attention, offer something for no cost. Hook them with a free offer and then you can reel them in.

Build your database

The best way to make money online is to get potential customers on your e-mail list. Every successful online marketer has an e-mail list where they constantly send out free advice while cleverly advertising their product or service. Become a Thought Leader for your industry.
