Marketing, Motherhood, and Mayhem

Is anything really free at Starbucks?

July 8th, 2010 by Deb McLean

I often take my laptop to McDonald’s or Panera Bread for the two hours my daughter has volleyball practice. I’d love to go to Starbucks, but they “charge” for WiFi. FINALLY, Starbucks is going to make free WiFi available at all of its locations as soon as this fall. There’s just too many people using laptops, smart phones and iPads and they’ve lost a bunch of $6 cups of coffee to $1.99 McCafe Frappes! But is it really free?

Starbucks is making a good move and will quickly be a major player in the free WiFi arena. What’s makes Starbucks different than many others is they’ll require you to log into their Starbucks Digital Network and give information about who you are and where you are. This will allow Starbucks to target you with an advertising message that speaks directly to you! This is a well-run company, great marketers and more than just coffee. It’s a comfortable and popular gathering place. Just don’t be fooled that they are giving away anything free.
